The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies' International Center for Terrorism Studies hosted a seminar, International Cooperation in Combating Terrorism: Review of 2011 and Outlook for 2012, on Thursday, February 2, from 2-4 pm, in the National Press Club's Holeman Lounge. This is the fourteenth in a series of annual ICTS events highlighting developments in the field of counterterrorism. Co-sponsors included the Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies and the International Law Institute's Inter-University Center for Legal Studies. Speakers included Michael S. Swetnam, Chairman and CEO of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies; Prof. Yonah Alexander, Director, International Center for Terrorism Studies, and Senior Fellow, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies; The Honorable Charles E. Allen, Former Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Former Assistant Director of Central Intelligence for Collection, Central Intelligence Agency ; Dan Rosen, Director, Plans and Policy, Bureau of Counterterrorism, U.S. Department of State; Ambassador Arun K. Singh, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India; The Honorable Timur Soylemez, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Turkey; and Mahmoud Hmoud, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Prof. Yonah Alexander is the Director of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies' International Center for Terrorism Studies. In February 2012, ICTS released its latest report on terrorism on the African continent, Special Update Report: Terrorism in North, West, and Central Africa: From 9/11 to the Arab Spring. In comments to Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin, Prof. Alexander commented on the findings of the report and the continuing threat of al-Qa'ida in the Maghreb. Ben Sheppard, PhD, is a terrorism analyst and an Academic Fellow with the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. In an interview with America’s Radio News Network, he discussed a warning by the Director of National Intelligence that Iran may be increasingly willing to attempt terrorist strikes on US soil. The Potomac Institute Press is pleased to announce the forthcoming release of the new book Al-Qa'ida: Ten Years After 9/11 and Beyond, (Potomac Institute Press, 2012) by Institute Chairman and CEO Michael Swetnam and ICTS Director Prof. Yonah Alexander, PhD. The authors previously collaborated on a 2001 landmark book on al-Qa'ida entitled Usama bin Laden's al-Qa'ida: Profile of a Terrorist Network (click here to access the Amazon.com listing). Their follow-up book, Al-Qa'ida: Ten Years After 9/11 and Beyond, will be available in an early-release version at the February 2 ICTS event at the National Press Club (see event listing, below) and soon on Amazon.com. The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies held a special Key Leader briefing by Admiral John C. Harvey, Commander, US Fleet Forces Command, and LtGen Dennis J. Hejlik, Commander, US Marine Forces Command, on Tuesday, January 31. The topic was Bold Alligator 2012 (BA12), a large-scale, multinational naval amphibious exercise, scheduled 30 Jan – 12 Feb. BA12 comes at a time of increased debate about the future of amphibious operations. The exercise is designed to revitalize naval amphibious core competencies, and to reinvigorate the Navy and Marine Corps’ culture of conducting combined operations from the sea.
