Biological security concerns are a permanent fixture of history, ranging from Mother Nature’s infectious diseases to man-made threats. Recent epidemics, such as Ebola and Zika, and the potential dangers of biological terrorism urgently need to be addressed through international partnerships to reduce the gravest health risks at home and abroad. Experts with governmental, inter-governmental, and non-governmental experience provided an assessment of future challenges and offered recommendations for comprehensive international biosecurity strategies.
Opening remarks were given by Michael S. Swetnam, CEO and Chairman of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. The panel was moderated by Professor Yonah Alexander, Director of the Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies and a Senior Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.The panel consisted of: Professor Rita Colwell a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Senior Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies; Professor S. Gerald Sandler, Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Medicine, Georgetown University and Medical Director, Transfusion Service, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital; Professor Rashid A. Chotani, Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a Senior Fellow at Potomac Institute for Policy Studies; and Dr. Norman Kahn a consultant at Counter-Bio LLC and the former Director, Intelligence Community Counter-Biological Weapons Program. Closing remarks were given by General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret.), Twenty-Ninth Commandant of the United States Marine Corps as well as a Senior Fellow and Chairman of the Board of Regents at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.
