Disasters do not impact everyone equally. Disaster Disparity is an ongoing and real crisis. The poor lack the resources to prepare for or respond to a disaster; those with special needs are typically overlooked. Who we are is intensified in a disaster -- prejudices and stereotypes are reinforced and economic gaps brought to the forefront, producing a disproportionate impact on those who can least afford a crisis. In turn, Disaster Disparity has significant ramifications for business, government, and society.
The National Security Health Policy Center of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies is joining with Firestorm Solutions, LLC in examining the hidden costs, the need for pragmatic planning, and the policy, practice, and legal implications of Disaster Disparity.
