Emerging Trends and Conditions, 2000-2025 Tuesday, January 11, 2000 Featured Speaker: LTG Patrick M. Hughes, USA (Ret.) We have entered the 3rd Millennium with mixed expectations. As we begin this next chapter, it is important to note trends and conditions emerging from the past that likely will influence future events. Economic conditions, fundamentally changing cultures, dynamic waves of new sciences and technologies, changing military circumstances all are transforming the world as we know it. The old order is fading and there never has been a historical condition quite like this one. General Hughes discussed some of the historical lessons to glean ideas and thoughts on the emerging future, particularly the topics of future warfare and military conditions. General Hughes has more than 29 years experience in intelligence operations, including serving as Director, Defense Intelligence Agency—the senior military intelligence position in the US government—before his retirement from the US Army in September, 1999. He also has served as Director of Intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Director of Intelligence for the US Central Command.
