"Security Challenges in the Balkans: Quo Vadis"

According to official and academic assessments, the Balkans remain vulnerable to several security concerns, including organized crime, Islamic terrorism, the refugee crisis, political turmoil, and economic instability. The purpose of this seminar is to review past lessons, consider future outlooks, and offer response strategies on national, regional, and global levels.

Opening remarks were made by Professor Don Wallace, Jr. (Chairman, International Law Institute). The panel was moderated by Professor Yonah Alexander (Director, Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies and Senior Fellow, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies) and featured Ambassador Pjer Simunovic (Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to the United States), Ambassador Haris Lalacos (Ambassador of Greece to the United States), Ambassador Vasko Naumovski (Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to the United States), and Professor David Kanin (Adjunct Professor of European Studies, School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University; former senior analyst, Central Intelligence Agency). Closing remarks were provided by General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret.) (Twenty-Ninth Commandant of the United States Marine Corps; Senior Fellow and Chairman of the Board of Regents, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies).
