ICTS on C-SPAN: "The Next Middle East Wars"

The International Center for Terrorism Studies at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies presented a special Luncheon Seminar, "The Next Middle East Wars: Lebanon, Gaza and Iran?" at noon on Wednesday, August 18. Panelists  included Prof. Yonah Alexander, Director of ICTS; Amb. Theodore Kattouff (Ret.), Former US Ambassador to Syria and President and CEO, AMIDEAST; Dr. Kenneth Katzman, Specialist in Middle East Affairs, Congressional Research Service; and Dr. Patrick Clawson, Deputy Director for Research, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. The event was co-sponsored by the Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies, the Inter-University Center for Legal Studies of the International Law Institute, and the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies' International Center for Terrorism Studies. Dr. Tawfik Hamid on Ground Zero Mosque Controversy

Dr. Tawfik Hamid is Chair for the Study of Islamic Radicalism at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.  He is also a former radical Muslim activist and is closely watching the controversy surrounding a proposal to build a mosque near New York City's Ground Zero. Dr. Hamid says there is one way the supporters of the mosque project can defuse criticism of their plans. According to Dr. Hamid, the mosque's supporters must make a public and unequivocal statement regarding their opposition to militant Islam and, specifically, to harsh provisions of Sharia law.  Click here to listen to Dr. Hamid's comments on Washington, DC's WTOP radio.

 

Guest Lecture: "What Is Pain?"

The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies' Center for Neurotechnology Studies presented a special Guest Lecture, "What Is Pain? Insights and Analyses from Philosophies of Mind to Practicalities of Care," by Ashur Bratt, Visiting Scholar, Grinnell College, on Monday, August 16. Mr. Bratt's talk examined a model for understanding pain that he suggests may help overcome the problem of subjectivity inherent in the discussion and treatment of pain. Senior Fellow Tevi Troy Testifies on Capitol Hill

Tevi Troy, PhD, is a Senior Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, and a writer and consultant on health care and domestic policy. Dr. Troy previously served as Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services. At a recent hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Dr. Troy testified on the problem of "agency capture," in which government agencies get too cozy with industries they are supposed to regulate. The hearing came in the wake of allegations that the federal Minerals Management Service's closeness to oil companies contributed to the BP oil spill disaster. Senior Fellow Dan Gallington on Legal Issues in Combating Foreign Affinity Terrorism

Potomac Institute for Policy Studies Senior Fellow Dan Gallington, Esq. is a national security expert who has served as General Counsel to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Deputy Counsel for Intelligence Policy at the Department of Justice, and Legal Advisor for Intelligence Oversight in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.  In the wake of recent charges against more than a dozen US residents accused of aiding the Somalian terrorist group Al-Shabaab, he spoke on the nationally broadcast Jim Bohannon Show about legal challenges that arise in the pursuit of foreign affinity terrorists inside the US.
