"European and U.S. Counter-Terrorism Strategies:

Quo Vadis?"

June 9, 2017

The latest attacks in the UK, France, and elsewhere have once again focused the world's attention on terrorism nationally, regionally, and globally. Moreover, in the aftermath of President Trump’s first foreign trip as well as his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement on climate, what are the likely directions for U.S. and European counter-terrorism strategies in the short and long terms? Will “America First” and “Europe First” priorities dominate future policies and actions or will a reset of multilateral cooperation to combat terrorism emerge between the allies? These and related challenges and opportunities were discussed by European and American experts.

Opening remarks were given by General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret.), Twenty-Ninth Commandant of the United States Marine Corp and Senior Fellow and Chairman of the Board of Regents, at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. The panel was moderated by Professor Yonah Alexander, Director of the Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies and Senior Fellow at Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. The panel consisted of: Michael Whine MBE, UK Member of the European Commission against Racism & Intolerance (ECRI), Council of Europe; Erik Brattberg, Director of Europe Program and a Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Dr. Aude Jehan-Robert, Nonresident Senior Fellow and former French Embassy Fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University; and Dr. Ralf Lesser, LL.M., German Liaison Officer to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
