Senior Fellow David Smith on Tensions in Central Asia

E-mail Print PDF

Potomac Institute for Policy Studies Senior Fellow Amb. David Smith writes in a recent issue of the Georgian magazine Tabula that Washington's determination to pursue a "reset" strategy with Russia may be clouding US judgment in its dealings with Central Asian countries - including its response to the crisis in Kyrgyzstan.  Amb. Smith writes that high geopolitical stakes in the region make such an approach unwise, arguing that the US would be better advised to "abandon 'reset,' stop sub-contracting its interests in central Asia to Moscow and conduct vigorous diplomacy with every central Asian country and some of the outside powers too."
