The New War on Terrorism: Legal Responses

5 October, 2001

Arlington, Va. - In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, brutal attacks on the United States, president George W. Bush declared a global war on terrorism. Response strategies include various legal steps such as enactment of appropriate legislation as well as the prosecution and punishment of terrorists. And yet, the legal response is often misunderstood and not fully appreciated as an effective tool to combat both domestic and international terrorists. The seminar will focus on a broad spectrum of issues such as definition of the challenge, the suspect citizen, the suspect alien, proposed congressional bills, and prospects for the globalization of the legal community in the new war against terrorism.
