Potomac Institute Launches Center of Excellence in Robotics

(Arlington, VA) – The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies proudly announces the establishment of a Center of Excellence in Robotics. The Institute’s newest center will serve as a timely, objective, and independent advisor on the issues of robotics technology and the policy implications derived from its use.

The Robotics Center’s projects will be constructed to provide insights and stimulate provocative discussion on the likely and unintended consequences of a future that includes a myriad of robotic systems. The Center will focus initially on national defense and homeland security, by providing best practices, concepts of operations, and program coordination and implementation to support strategic programs.

The mission of the Center of Excellence is consistent with Potomac’s dual mission of “thinking and doing”—it will analyze specific public policy relationships as they relate to advanced technology solutions, and implement and operationalize robotics programs for its stakeholders. The Center’s first project explores the evolving technologies that enable robotic systems today and in the near future. This project is exploring the challenges and opportunities of robotic systems as well as related policy, research, and investment implications. “This important study will concentrate on the development of a roadmap for robotics technology and the policy issues that must be addressed if we wish to appropriately implement these systems,” said Michael Swetnam, Chairman and CEO of Potomac Institute.

During its first year, the Center of Excellence will work specifically with the Naval services to assist them in understanding Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operational and employment issues, as well as the technical challenges associated with robotics technologies.

The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies is an independent, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit public policy research institute, and is dedicated to the development and implementation of policies that advocate and manage the increasing role of science and technology in our evolving world. http://www.PotomacInstitute.org
