Fourth Annual Navigator Awards a Success

Washington, D.C. — On September 9, 2003, the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies hosted the Fourth Annual Navigator Awards. More than two hundred people attended the event to honor Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), Dr. Anthony Tether, Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and John Rennie, Editor in Chief of Scientific American, for their contributions to, and leadership of, the formation of science and technology policy. “All of these men are exceptional in their respective fields. We hope they inspire others in the science and technology community to push the envelope and work together to achieve even greater scientific advances for our country,” said Mike Swetnam, CEO of the Institute.

Presenters of the awards included Dr. Rita Colwell, Director of the National Science Foundation, and Gilman Louie, CEO of In-Q-Tel, both of whom were past winners of the Navigator Award.

The keynote address was provided by General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret.), who spoke of the importance of being a united country, working together on the tough issues and winning the war on terrorism. General Gray challenged everyone to use his or her strengths to create an unbeatable force against our enemies. General Gray was also recognized with a “Lifetime Achievement “ award for his many contributions to science and technology.

The Potomac Institute is pleased with the success of the Navigator Awards dinner and is dedicated to furthering the use of science and technology in domestic policy, and honoring those who those who have shown distinguished service in support of these efforts. “The Navigator Awards creates an expansion of the network of those in science and technology by bringing together people of different disciplines and recognizing their leadership,” said Dr. Dennis McBride, President of the Potomac Institute.
