Potomac Institute Hosts Intelligence Seminar on Intelligence Analysis

Arlington, VA -- On May 17, 2004, the Potomac Institute hosted an intelligence seminar that examined intelligence analysis failures entitled “Surveying Analysis Shortfalls.” These failures don’t stem from one cause, but are the result of multiple interdependent problems. Rigorous diagnosis is needed in order to arrive at the proper remedies to update the analytic tools and culture that have been a part of the United States since the Cold War.

Speakers included Michael Swetnam, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, Bill Nolte, ADDCI/A&P, Russ Travers, TTIC, Jeff Cooper, SAIC, and Carmen Medina, Chief/Strategic Assessments Group, Directorate of Intelligence, CIA. Some of the topics that were discussed included defining analysis and its critical users, intelligence and warning, and key analytic problems.

This seminar was part of a larger seminar series that is analyzing the Intelligence community called “Revolution in Intelligence Affairs: Transforming Intelligence for Emerging Challenges.” Through the analysis of the intelligence community and the challenges it faces in the future, we can prepare policy options that address these matters in order for our National Security to be aptly prepared.
