March 17, 2005 News Release Arlington, VA – On Thursday, March 24, 2005, Stuart J.D. Schwartzstein, Former Coalition Provisional Authority Advisor to the Iraqi Ministry of Science and Technology, will speak at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies on the current state of science and technology (S&T) in Iraq. He will discuss what S&T tells us about the legacies of Saddam’s regime, and prospects for the future of Iraq. The seminar is a part of the Potomac Institute’s Executive Luncheon Series. Since the collapse of Saddam’s regime in the spring of 2003, Iraq’s weapons and military scientific and technological capabilities continue to receive considerable interest, while Iraq’s other scientific capabilities and needs have received minimal attention. However, analysis of the current state of S&T in Iraq can assist our country in better understanding the legacies of Saddam’s regime, the current situation in Iraq, and prospects for the future of Iraq. Mr. Schwartzstein will speak in-depth on these issues during the hour-long seminar. Mr. Schwartzstein served with the Coalition Provisional Authority and the American Embassy, Baghdad (after June, 30, 2003) as an advisor to the Iraqi Ministry of Science and Technology. He also served as an advisor to the Iraqi National Academy of Science. He continues to follow issues related to science and technology in Iraq.
