Conference on Countering Biological Terrorism

4 August, 1997

Will terrorists turn to germ warfare that could decimate our population? Timothy McVeigh looked for "body count" in the Oklahoma City bombing. The World Trade Center bombers planned a detonation that would have killed thousands. The Aum Shinrikyo cult's nerve gas release in Japan injured over 5,000.

How difficult is it for terrorists to find and use biological agents? Agents can be grown in sufficient quantities to infect thousands and covert dissemination will permit terrorists to escape and cover their tracks.

These issues and others will be addressed at a conference on Biological Terrorism, sponsored by the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. Topics to be addressed include: the growing number of deadly germs and how available they are for use by terrorists; the increasing tendency of certain terrorist groups to consider using biological weapons; and our nation's ability to react to this growing threat.
