"NATO: Post Warsaw Agenda"

October 31, 2016

NATO, as it marked its 68th anniversary, is still facing a broad range of old and new challenges, including piracy, terrorism, regional and global conflicts, humanitarian crises, proliferation of WMD, and cyber threats. In the face of these and other strategic concerns and in the aftermath of the latest Warsaw Summit that focused inter alia on strengthening and modernizing the Alliance’s deterrence and defense posture and projecting stability beyond its Eastern borders, the question arises whether the 28 nations’ partnership will continue to play its essential political and military role in the coming years.

Opening and closing remarks were given by General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret.), Twenty-Ninth Commandant of the United States Marine Corps and Senior Fellow and Chairman of the Board of Regents at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. Moderating the panel was Professor Yonah Alexander, Director of the Inter-University Center for Terrorism Studies and Senior Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, and Richard Prosen, Office of European Security Political, and Military Affairs (EUR/RPM), U.S. Department of State. Kurt Volker, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO and currently, the Executive Director of The McCain Institute for International Leadership; Dr. Daniel Hamilton, former U.S. deputy assistant secretary of State for European Affairs and U.S. special coordinator for Southeast European stabilization and associate director of the Policy Planning Staff for two secretaries of State; Currently, Executive Director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations, Johns Hopkins SAIS; Jeffrey Rathke former director of the State Department Press Office and deputy director of the Private Office of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels and currently, a Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Europe Program at CSIS; and Dr. Jorge Benitez, Director, NATOSource and a Senior Fellow, Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security, Atlantic Council.
